Diagnosing Bad Ice: Chatter, Ridges and Snow
Most fresh-ice defects trace back to the blade. Fine uniform ridges running in line with the blade edge mean a dull or rounded edge. A single ridge or score line that repeats in the same place means a nick in the edge. Snow left behind on a finished pass means the blade is scraping rather than shaving cleanly. Audible chatter and vibration through the machine mean the edge is skipping instead of holding contact. If the ice is fine but the resurfacer is laboring, the blade is dull enough to be adding drag before it is bad enough to show marks.

Every sheet an arena lays down starts at the blade. As the resurfacer makes its passes, the blade shaves the scored top layer off so a thin film of fresh water can freeze into a clean surface. When the finished ice is wrong, the blade is the first thing to rule out, because it is both the most common cause and the fastest to check.

Chatter and ridges
Chatter is the blade losing and regaining contact rapidly instead of staying in a steady cut. It shows on the ice as small uniform ridges in line with the blade edge, and if it gets bad enough the whole conditioner starts to vibrate audibly. Operators tend to notice the sound before the marks.
The cause is nearly always an edge that has rounded off. A sharp edge bites and holds; a rounded one rides up, releases, and drops back in, many times a second. Before assuming the blade, confirm the ridges are uniform and run the full width. Ridges in one track only point at a nick rather than general dullness, and a nicked blade will keep cutting that same line on every pass until it is reground.
If the edge is genuinely sharp and chatter persists, look at how the blade is mounted. A blade that is not seated flat, or is shimmed unevenly, will chatter no matter how recently it was ground.
Snow on a finished pass
A blade in good condition shaves a clean layer that the conditioner picks up, leaving a wet surface that freezes glassy. When the edge dulls, it stops slicing and starts scraping, which produces loose snow the machine cannot fully collect. That snow then gets wetted by the flood water and freezes into the surface as a soft, slow, uneven top layer.

Drag with no visible marks
An edge that is on its way out adds load before it adds marks. If the same cut depth is making the machine work harder than it did a week ago, the blade has already dulled past its efficient range even though the ice still looks acceptable. Rinks that track engine load, or simply have an operator who knows the machine well, often catch a blade at this stage, which is the cheapest point to catch it.
When it is not the blade
A dull blade explains most bad ice, but not all of it. Before sending a blade out unnecessarily, rule these out.
- Flood water temperature and volume. Too much water, or water too cold, freezes unevenly regardless of how clean the cut was.
- Cut depth set too aggressively, which produces snow the conditioner cannot clear even with a sharp edge.
- Machine speed. Cutting too fast gives the conditioner less time to pick up shavings and lay water evenly.
- A worn or damaged conditioner, towel or squeegee, which leaves water sitting rather than spread.
- Ice depth overall. A sheet that has been built up over a season behaves differently from a freshly laid one.
- Building humidity and air temperature, which change how the surface sets after a flood.
